30 Natural Home Remedies for Eczema (Atopic dermatitis) in Kids & Adults


Eczema refers to a medical condition that is characterized by irritated or inflamed skin. Sufferers of eczema have dry, itchy, red, or cracked skin. The most commonly occurring type of eczema is known as atopic eczema or atopic dermatitis. 


Almost 90% of the sufferers of eczema are aged below 5 years. Children have rashes on the scalp, face, hands, and feet. In adults, the rashes develop on the inside of the elbow and the knee as well as the neck, hands, and feet. Eczema can, fortunately, be controlled with correct treatment.

Best Natural Home Remedies For Eczema (Atopic dermatitis)

1. Turmeric

Due to its antioxidant qualities turmeric is very effective in curing all skin problems. Turmeric contains active component called ‘curcumin’, which has bactericidal and anti-inflammatory properties that help treat skin itching and inflammation.

      1.      Mix 1-2 teaspoon of turmeric with enough raw milk or rose water to make a smooth paste. Apply this paste on the affected skin area for 1-2 hours and then wash off with cool water and pat dry. Follow this remedy 2 times a day until the redness, inflammation and itchiness is gone.

2.      Or mix half teaspoon of turmeric to cup of boiling water or milk and let it simmer for 8-9 minutes. Allow it to cool and drink it. 

3.      Boil 1 tablespoon of turmeric to cup of boiling water. Boil it for 10 minutes and apply this warm water on affected skin for 1-2 hours. Rinse it off with cool water.



2. Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil has anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing the redness and inflammation of your skin due to eczema.

1.      Take enough amount of extra virgin olive oil and apply it over affected skin and leave it for 5-10 minutes (clean the affected skin before applying olive oil)
2.      Then gently rub this olive oil on the skin so that the olive oil gets deeper into the affected skin.
3.      Now place hot washcloth over the affected skin and hold it on till the cloth cools down.
4.      Repeat this process 4-5 times continuously.
5.      Then wash the skin with cools water. Repeat this remedy once or twice a day to get rid of eczema and eczema scars.



3. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is an effective herb for treatment of eczema. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory property which helps soothe the itching inflammation of skin due to eczema. Additionally, it contains anti-microbial properties, which prevents further skin infection. It also helps hydrate the red, dry skin caused itching and keep the skin moisturized naturally.

1.      Extract 1-2 tablespoon of fresh aloe gel from aloe leaf or you can use readymade pure aloe gel.
2.      Add 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice and vitamin E oil to this ale gel.
3.      Apply this mixture directly on the affected skin.
4.      Leave it on for 1 hour and then wash it off with normal water.
5.      Follow this procedure twice daily for best and fast result



4. Sandalwood

Sandalwood is very effective in treatment of many skin problems eczema, sunburn etc as it has anti-inflammatory, soothing, antimicrobial, and cooling properties that help alleviate irritated, dry and red skin. Moreover, it can help lighten up eczema scars naturally.

1.        Add 1-2 teaspoon of pure sandalwood powder to half teaspoon of camphor powder and enough rose water or plain water to prepare smooth paste.
2.        Apply this mixture on the affected skin area and leave it on for 30-45 minutes.
3.        Then rinse off with cool water. Follow this remedy once or twice a day.



5. Carrots with turmeric

Peel 2-3 carrots and boil them for 10-12 minutes. Then mash them to make smooth paste and add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder to it. 

Apply the paste over affected areas for 30-40 minutes and rinse with cool water. Repeat this once or twice a day.


6. Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil or Vitamin E gel capsules are also found to be very helpful in reducing eczema skin problems as it is rich in natural tocopherols.

1.        Apply enough amount of Vitamin E oil on the affected skin
2.        Leave it on for about 30-45 minutes.
3.        The Vitamin E oil will react with the eczema and will help in reducing the itchiness, inflammation and other eczema symptoms.
4.        Repeat this remedy 2-3 times a day to get rid of eczema.



7. Neem/Indian Lilac

Neem or Indian lilac has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-microbial properties that help to relieve eczema symptoms such as redness, dryness, pain, inflammation and swelling.


Neem oil is a rich source of vitamin E and essential fatty oils that keep the affected skin moisturized. You can use neem leaves and neem oil to treat eczema.

      1.        Take handful of neem leaves, half teaspoon of turmeric and 1 teaspoon of sesame.
      2.        Grind all these ingredients together to make smooth paste.
      3.        Then apply this paste over the affected areas for 30-40 minutes.
      4.        Wash it off with cool water.
      5.        Follow this procedure once or twice a day for few weeks.
6.        You can store this mixture in refrigerator.


8. Neem and glycerin

1.        Add 1-2 teaspoon of neem oil and 1 tablespoon of glycerin to your warm bath water
2.        Soak yourself in it for no longer than 10-15 minutes.
3.        Pat dry your skin properly. Repeat this once a day for 3-4 weeks to get rid of eczema symptoms.
