Gone are the days when bed time stories were a routine or reading a good novel maybe. It seems so ancient for today. These days we see people lying in the bed in a dark room and only a small blue light shining onto their faces. Yes, this is the blue light from their smart phones.

People check their Facebook feed or see how many likes their new Instagram picture has got or the most common - chats on What’s app. Checking mobile just before going to sleep has become a universal routine or habit just like eating or breathing.

Thought we all know that before going bed, is the only time we get from our busy life where we can connect with people or socialise even if virtually. We get to know all the updates from the day right in our hands so definitely everybody is liable to check phones before sleep. But doctors and researchers all over the world do not think so. They have discovered that using smart phones before sleep is the most wrong thing we do to ourselves and it has very dangerous effects on our health.

You might think that I am going to tell you about the harmful radiations smart phones emit which may cause cancer and all that blah blah which you have seen read and heard for a thousand times. But not today, I will go one step further and talk about the blue light which your smart phones emit and the numerous health hazards caused by that light.

Reason behind these problems

We all know that the sun's light has a full spectrum of colours so we are already exposed to blue light in the day time, which is okay As it is natural. But at night time we are again exposed to the blue light through the screens of our phones, laptops and LED TVs. Now this exposure may be the reason you and many small kids today are wearing spectacle. Yes it can damage your eye sight, as well as suppress the melatonin production- the hormone which helps you sleep. And most of us thought that surfing phones before sleep helps reduce stress....funny isn't it?

According to researchers, smart phones and tablets are associated with following health problems:

1. Affecting your Sleep and Brain

Talking about melatonin again, it regulates your body's sleep/wake cycle. Using smart phone before sleep disrupts its regular secretion and brings the melatonin level down in your body; this causes loss of sleep and in turn, leads to various health problems which include:

Cardiovascular Problems
Slower Response Time
Lack of Memory Recall
It may ruin your sex life
Makes you feel "hangover"
Leukemia

2. Increased risk of Cancer

So till now hopefully your misconception about smart phones reducing stress might have broken. Now you know that in fact, the blue light from phones cause sleep problems. And a person with less sleep will always be more stressed, tired and feel irritable also disturbed sleep increases the risk of Prostate cancer and Breast cancer.

As I told you earlier that the blue light exposure reduces the secretion of the hormone named melatonin which is a very powerful anti oxidant and our body's natural defense against cancer.

So this way by using your phones just before sleep on a regular basis you are letting your guards down in front of a very deadly and most of the times incurable disease.

Unfortunately, the cell phone radiations/electromagnetic/radio frequency has the ability to penetrate human bodies and may cause damages. Thousands of research says, using a cell phone a half hour a day may increase risk of brain tumor by 30 percent.

3. Does looking at your phone affect your eyes?

We are often told by our elders not to read while lying on the bed as this causes stress to our eyes. Now if you use your smart phones before you sleep then you are not only reading or watching while lying on the bed also you are exposed to the blue light. When we are lying we tend to hold the phone closer than usual. This can lead to loss of central vision, macular degeneration and cataract.

One doctor shares the story of a 35-year old patient whose eyes with cataracts were in similar condition to those of a 75-year old. He says the main reason for this was smart phone use before sleeping even though this case requires further studies but the primary reason is this.

So tonight as you lie on the bed and prepare to sleep by browsing the internet better think of what you have read and the consequences of using smart phones before sleeping.
